The Question Block above the first Goomba in Mario Game does not always give you what you expect, and checking what pops out before rushing ahead is the first habit that separates a smooth run from a quick restart in this classic-style platformer.

Running and Jumping in Mario Game
Mario runs left and right and jumps with the up arrow, and jump height depends on how long you hold it. The movement carries a little momentum, so stopping on a narrow platform takes a short release before landing. Players who grew up on classic Mario recognize the feel quickly, though the physics here are slightly floatier than the console originals.
That floatiness is the first thing most players notice. Jumps hang in the air just a touch longer.
It helps on long gaps but hurts on precise landings. Over the first couple of levels you learn to start your jumps a little earlier and release the arrow before touching down, and once that clicks the levels flow naturally.
Goombas, Koopas and Question Blocks
The Mushroom Kingdom lineup is the familiar one. Goombas walk slowly toward Mario and fall with a single stomp, while Koopa Troopas retreat into their shells, which you can kick into other enemies. Question Blocks hold coins or a Super Mushroom, and bricks above them sometimes hide extra coins.
- Stomp Goombas from above, never walk into them
- Kick Koopa shells only when the path ahead is clear
- Hit every Question Block early to find the Super Mushroom
- Watch out for a kicked shell bouncing back off walls
The bouncing shell is the most common surprise death in the game. Kick one toward a wall and it can come straight back at Mario before you have time to jump.
Power-Ups and the Super Mushroom
Grabbing a Super Mushroom makes Mario bigger and gives him an extra hit before losing a life. That buffer changes how you play: small Mario must avoid every enemy, while Super Mario can afford a mistake or two.
Many beginners skip Question Blocks to save time. That habit costs them the Super Mushroom right before harder sections.
Careful players treat the first few blocks of every level as essential. Collecting the power-up early makes the whole level more forgiving, and speedrunners are about the only players who can safely ignore it.
How Mario Game Gets Harder Later
Early in the game the levels feature wide platforms and slow Goombas. Once Koopa Troopas appear in groups and gaps widen, every jump starts to matter. Later levels stack enemies near pits, so a stomp has to be followed instantly by another jump.
The honest criticism players raise is hitbox inconsistency. Sometimes a stomp registers as a side hit, costing Mario his Super Mushroom.
Players who accept that quirk and give themselves a little extra height when stomping usually avoid the problem. It is a fan-made platformer, and small rough edges are part of the experience that the community tends to forgive when the levels themselves are fun.
How do you defeat Koopa Troopas safely?
Stomp the Koopa Troopa once to send it into its shell. Then decide whether to kick the shell or leave it. If there is a wall nearby, wait until the shell bounces past before moving, because it can return and hit Mario.
Where is the Super Mushroom usually hidden?
It typically sits inside one of the first Question Blocks in a level. Hit each block from below as you pass. The Super Mushroom slides along the ground, so jump down to grab it before it falls into a pit.
Why does Mario sometimes get hit while stomping?
The stomp needs Mario to land from above, and landing at a shallow angle can count as a side hit. Jump a little higher and come down more directly onto the Goomba or Koopa. Holding the jump key slightly longer usually fixes the issue.
Mario Game is a classic-style run where checking every Question Block for the Super Mushroom, stomping Goombas cleanly and respecting a kicked Koopa shell are what get Mario to the flagpole level after level.
